The AIGA recently published an article called Can In-house Design Departments be Respectable? The article is worth checking out. I’d like to know if any of you are doing the things mentioned.
The article was authored by David Baker, a management consultant focused on the design field. He’s a popular speaker at many in-house conferences and he’s first person who I recall saying, “having designers in-house is not cheaper than hiring an external firm.” That is something to think through as it’s the reason many people give for hiring in-house.
Check out his website (www.recourses.com) and look into some of his work. I’ve just downloaded a host of free papers to comb through.
